North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has set a goal of launching three more reconnaissance satellites next year, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), at the end of a five-day plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea on December 30.

"Based on the experience of successfully launching and operating the first reconnaissance satellite in 2023 in the field of space development, the mission to launch three more reconnaissance satellites in 2024 was announced and overall measures to promote the development of space science technology were discussed," KCNA reported.

North Korea successfully put a military reconnaissance satellite named Malligyong-1 into orbit on November 21 after two failed attempts in May and August.

North Korea's successful launch of a reconnaissance satellite marks a major milestone for Pyongyang. The satellites will give Pyongyang earlier warning than usual of attacks from South Korea and the United States.

This development has worried the US and its Asian allies. South Korea, Japan and the US criticized Pyongyang's launch as a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

US media said that North Korea's military reconnaissance satellites could pose the "latest threat" to the US and its allies, and the world needs to be prepared because Pyongyang could launch more reconnaissance satellites.
