North Korea says new sanctions monitoring group is illegal

(CLO) On October 19, North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui issued a press statement titled "Countries involved in imposing illegal and unreasonable sanctions on the DPRK will pay a heavy price."

The new US-led "Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Group" is completely illegal in terms of its reason for existence and purpose, and its very existence constitutes a denial of the UN Charter, Choe Son Hui was quoted by KCNA as saying.

"Those who engage in the smear campaign against the DPRK will pay a heavy price," Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui added, calling the group, along with eight other countries, a US misdeed that disregarded international order and was "the most flagrant violation" of the DPRK's sovereignty .

The United States, South Korea and Japan officially announced on Wednesday the formation of a new multinational group to monitor the implementation of sanctions against North Korea.

The new monitoring group was created after Russia in March refused and China abstained from voting on the annual renewal of a previous UN panel of experts that has monitored North Korea's nuclear and missile programs for the past 15 years.

Amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, the United States and South Korea are making accusations about North Korea's military ties with Russia. South Korea's spy agency said Friday that North Korea has sent 1,500 special forces to Russia's Far East to train at local military bases.

Russia and North Korea have both denied involvement in the arms transfer. They have also rejected South Korea's accusation that North Korea may have sent some of its troops to help Russia fight against Ukraine.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he could not confirm reports that North Korea had sent troops to Russia for deployment to Ukraine.
