Faced with the situation of pepper and some other local crops always being in an unstable state, with crop failure and low prices, finding a new direction to bring a stable source of income is an issue that Mr. Dung always worries about.
Through research and study of market demand and local reality, 3 years ago, Mr. Dung decided to destroy his pepper garden to switch to growing purple lemons.
With 5 sao of land, Mr. Dung invested nearly 45 million VND to buy 400 lemon seedlings to plant.
Mr. Dung shared: "Going to many places, I see that restaurants and refreshment shops all have lemon slices for seasoning or making drinks, and most families use lemons every day.
Besides, in the border district of Bu Dop, no one grows lemons to sell in large quantities, so I decided to grow purple-flowered lemons. In fact, this direction has brought my family a fairly stable income."
According to Mr. Dung, lemon trees are easy to grow and care for, do not require much investment, and can be harvested after 18 months.
Purple-flowered lemon, also known as four-season lemon, can be harvested 3 times a year, each crop lasts continuously for 20-25 days, yielding about 3.5-4 tons, with an average selling price of 13-15 thousand VND/kg.

Besides, the output is stable, every season after picking, traders come to the garden to buy the fruit on the same day. With 5 sao of lemon, each year Mr. Dung's family earns more than 150 million VND.
Mr. Dung said that at this time, the economic efficiency of lemon trees is more stable than many other local crops. In addition to harvesting fruit, Mr. Dung also grafts and propagates to sell to people to expand the model, together developing the economy .
Mr. Hoang Duc Canh, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Tan Tien Commune, said: "Mr. Dung is one of the first people in the commune to grow purple lemons and has had a stable output.
In practice, the model has shown clear economic efficiency. We will organize for some members to visit and learn from the experience to replicate the model. However, we recommend that members do not expand massively."
The purple lemon growing model of Mr. Dung's household shows that grasping the market and local advantages to develop the economy is the right direction. However, people should not subjectively develop massively, avoiding the situation of supply exceeding demand leading to planting and then cutting.
