Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/12/2024

China today, December 22, responded to the US approving a military aid package of more than 571 million USD for Taiwan.

A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said today, December 22, that the US military aid package of more than 571 million USD for Taiwan seriously violated the "one China principle" and the terms of the joint communique between China and the US, according to Reuters.

The spokesman also said China would take "all necessary measures" to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling Taiwan a "red line that must not be crossed" in China-US relations, according to a statement issued by China's Foreign Ministry.

There is currently no information about the reaction of the US or Taiwan to the above warning of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Taiwan receives first 38 Abrams tanks from the US

Earlier, AFP on December 21 quoted information from the White House saying that US President Joe Biden had approved $571.3 million in military aid for Taiwan. Information from the White House did not provide details about the new military aid package, about 3 months after a $567 million aid package was approved.

The announcement of the new aid package comes days after Taiwan received 38 advanced Abrams tanks from the US, believed to be its first new tanks in 30 years, according to AFP.

China has stepped up military pressure on Taiwan, including daily military activities near the island and two drills this year, according to Reuters.

Last week, Taiwan issued a warning in response to what it said was China's largest naval force in three decades operating around Taiwan as well as in the East and South China Seas, according to Reuters.
