Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi met on the sidelines of an event in Astana, Kazakhstan, on May 20.
The Russian Foreign Minister said that this role could encourage China to continue its efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis.
"We share (China's) view that the real causes of the conflict should first of all be addressed and the legitimate interests of all sides should be protected, with ensuing agreements based on the principles of equality and indivisibility of security," the Russian foreign minister told TASS.
“Let me stress once again, this requires respect for the status quo on the ground, which reflects the wishes of the people living there,” Russia's top diplomat said.

Moscow has long called for peace talks on the precondition that Kyiv and the West must recognize the Russian-controlled territories in Ukraine as officially part of Russia. The Kyiv government has rejected these proposals.
Mr. Lavrov also criticized US aid to Ukraine and said Washington was fanning the flames of conflict in the Middle East.
On June 15-16, Switzerland will host a peace conference for Ukraine, with more than 100 countries invited but not Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly said that his US counterpart Joe Biden should attend a June peace conference in Switzerland after reports that the White House owner may not attend.
The Kyiv government is seeking to expand the conference's participants in the hope of gaining greater global support for Kyiv's vision for a possible end to hostilities with Russia.
Meanwhile, Moscow believes that a peace conference without Russia's participation is absurd and incapable of resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
