China blacklists US military contractors over Taiwan

Today (January 2), China announced sanctions against 10 US military contractors for selling weapons to Taiwan, the second round of sanctions against US companies within a week for the same reason.

According to AFP, China's Ministry of Commerce has put subsidiaries of US military contractors such as Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and Raytheon on its "Unreliable Entities List" for supplying weapons to Taiwan.

Those on the blacklist will be banned from importing or exporting or investing new capital in China, while senior managers will be banned from entering the country.

Also on January 2, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce added 28 US companies, mostly military firms, to its Export Control List. Chinese companies are prohibited from exporting dual-use civilian-military products to those on the list.

China said it decided to ban names like General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing on the grounds of protecting national security and interests, while ensuring the implementation of international commitments such as preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

A US-made medium-range AIM-120 missile is about to be installed on a Taiwanese fighter jet during a drill in Hualien (Taiwan) in August 2022.

Less than a week ago, on December 27, 2024, China also imposed sanctions on seven US military industrial companies, including Boeing's subsidiary Insitu, for their participation in US military aid to Taiwan.

Insitu is a drone manufacturer and a major supplier to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

In December 2024, Beijing also reacted angrily after US President Joe Biden approved providing a $571.3 million defense assistance package to Taiwan.

The White House did not provide details about the military aid package, which comes less than three months after a similar $567 million aid package was approved.
