China tells US it will never compromise on Taiwan

In a statement released on January 10 about the dialogue taking place in Washington DC (USA), China's Ministry of Defense said that the country "stressed that it will never compromise or back down on the Taiwan issue", and called on the US to "stop providing weapons" to the island.

The statement also mentioned the East Sea issue.

The US-China military dialogue took place at the Pentagon on January 8-9.

The statement said the Chinese side "made clear its solemn stance and key concerns on issues concerning China's core interests and international hotspots". China is also willing to develop healthy and stable military relations with the US "on the basis of equality and respect".

US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed in November to restart key dialogues between the two countries' militaries that had been delayed for more than a year.

In December, General Charles “CQ” Brown, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke with General Liu Zhenli, chief of the Joint Staff Department of China’s Central Military Commission. The two discussed “the importance of working together to manage competition responsibly,” according to Washington.

The Pentagon said that US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Michael Chase and Major General Song Yanchao, Deputy Director of the Office of International Military Cooperation of the Central Military Commission of China, co-chaired the dialogue at the Pentagon on January 8-9. This is the 17th time this activity has been held.

"The two sides discussed the US-China defense relationship and Mr. Chase emphasized the importance of maintaining lines of communication between the two militaries to prevent competition from turning into conflict," Reuters quoted the Pentagon's statement about the conversation.

Mr. Chase said the US would “continue to safely and responsibly sail and operate wherever international law allows.” The US stressed “the importance of respecting freedom of navigation at sea,” according to the statement.

The US Defense Department said Mr. Chase also "reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."
