After spending decades traveling three hours to get to school, now students at Guanzhai Primary School (Wunnan Province, China) only need to travel 30 minutes to get to class.

Every Sunday, nine schoolchildren and their parents eagerly line up to board the elevator and begin their journey from Nizhuhe Village, located at an altitude of 1,100 meters, to Guanzhai Primary School, located at an altitude of 1,650 meters. They travel by shuttle bus, elevator and cable car.

"Before, it took me more than 3 hours to take my eldest son to school. It took 6-7 hours to walk there and back. Now, when we take our second son to school, we can take the elevator and cable car, which is very convenient. It only takes 30 minutes from home to school. If we take the bus in the tourist area, it only takes 12 minutes," said Ms. Zhao Suzhen, a local resident.

Guanzhai Primary School is located in the Nizhu River Gorge tourist area, bordering Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. It is a boarding school, with a total of 51 students from grades 1 to 5. Of these, 9 students are from Nizhuhe village.

With endless vertical cliffs, the village seems isolated from the outside world , making it difficult for students to climb the mountains to get to school.

In 2015, local authorities tackled the most difficult 3.5-km stretch by chiseling out steps from rocks, installing chains on steep and slippery cliffs, and creating new paths to ensure the safety of students walking to school.

In 2016, the town further enhanced safety by installing aluminum alloy railings and resurfacing the road. In late 2018, construction of the cliff-top elevator project officially began.

In 2022, the Nizhu Gorge tourist area project was completed and opened to local residents for free. The combination of a 268-meter-high outdoor sightseeing elevator and a nearly 200-meter-high cable car transformed the 3-hour climb that students had taken before 2014 into a 30-minute trip.
