From Nguyen Thuy Linh's loss: Vietnamese badminton athletes lack everything when competing internationally

If given a better launching pad, Nguyen Tien Minh in the past and now Nguyen Thuy Linh and other Vietnamese badminton talents would go far in the world of badminton.

Sorry and sympathy for Nguyen Thuy Linh

At the 2025 Canada Open Badminton Tournament that just ended, Nguyen Thuy Linh excellently won the runner-up title in the women's singles event. Vietnamese badminton fans were a bit regretful when this 28-year-old player could not defeat Japanese player Nanami Suizu to touch the championship trophy of the tournament in the World Tour Super 300 system for the first time in her career. However, when hearing the number 1 Vietnamese player confess that she was exhausted, everyone sympathized with Nguyen Thuy Linh.

While Chinese, Japanese, and Korean tennis players always have a team of professional coaches, fitness coaches, assistants, etc. by their side when competing internationally, Nguyen Thuy Linh is "alone". That is the reason why she could not keep up with the opposite time zone in the US and was shocked to lose right from the first round of the US Open. Although she advanced far in the Canadian Open, her exhaustion when entering the final was also pointed out by the coaches as the reason being the lack of support team in recovery. A fan shared the story of being on the same flight and witnessing Nguyen Thuy Linh alone dragging 5 suitcases, managing everything while competing in the cold season in a foreign country, showing the hardship of the athletes.

What did Vietnam's number 1 female badminton player say?

On the way back home after the recent Canada Open, Nguyen Thuy Linh shared: "My grandfather took me to badminton but my mother was the one who stopped me because she was worried that I would have a hard time. And now it's my grandmother's turn to stop me, she said: Every time you go somewhere, when you get there, you have to call me back so I can sleep. Let's not compete anymore, going far away and being alone is too hard." Although she is always optimistic, trying to overcome difficulties and seeing it as part of the journey to pursue her passion, Nguyen Thuy Linh could not help but feel sad. "From a certain perspective, I feel sorry and hurt, probably because I am also a normal person. I will always find ways to live well and accept positive things. Because around me there are always people who love and accompany me. I will not fall down," Linh shared.

Limited budgets from both the locality and the sports sector are the reason why Nguyen Thuy Linh does not have a coach or expert to accompany her to international tournaments. Mr. Khoa Trung Kien, in charge of the badminton department, Vietnam Sports Administration, said that the Vietnam badminton team currently has Indonesian expert Hariawan Hong. However, this expert must be in charge of the entire team, not just any individual, so in suitable tournaments such as the Asian Championship, SEA Games..., the expert will accompany Nguyen Thuy Linh and the players.

Tennis player Nguyen Hai Dang, who also participated in two consecutive international badminton tournaments in the US and Canada recently, said that the cost for this competition was more than 200 million VND, including airfare, hotel, food, etc. Nguyen Thuy Linh won the second place in the women's singles with a prize of about 230 million VND, which was just enough to cover the cost of the trip, while Nguyen Hai Dang and Le Duc Phat stopped in the first rounds so they did not receive any prize money. Previously, Vietnam's No. 1 tennis player Nguyen Tien Minh also often competed internationally alone, overcoming many difficulties to reach the peak of his career with a bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships and a top 5 ranking by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Nguyen Thuy Linh also followed in the footsteps of her senior when she entered the world's top 20 for the first time. The desire of Vietnamese badminton players is to have better investment to "fly high" in the international arena, making Vietnamese sports famous.
