On October 2, Indonesian President Joko Widodo announced that the country has officially put into operation a high-speed railway connecting the capital Jakarta to Bandung City. This is the first high-speed railway in Southeast Asia.
The high-speed railway project has a total investment of 7.3 billion USD, with a total route length of 142km.
The high-speed rail line is officially called WHOOSH - an acronym for "time-saving, optimal operation, reliable system" in Indonesian.
The electric train has no direct carbon emissions and travels at speeds of nearly 350km/h, cutting travel time between Jakarta and Bandung from three hours to less than one hour.
Overseen by the state-owned joint venture PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (PT KCIC), the train is well integrated with the local public transport system. In addition, the high-speed railway has been tropicalized and equipped with safety systems that can respond to earthquakes, floods and other emergencies.
At the ceremony in Jakarta, President Joko Widodo said that the Jakarta-Bandung railway marks the development of this type of public transport in Indonesia in a modern, efficient and environmentally friendly direction.
The railway project has been running a free trial run since the second week of September and the trial run will be extended. Ticket sales will be launched in mid-October, a senior official said.
Previously, on September 29, the Indonesian Ministry of Transport granted an operating license to the company to build and operate the above railway line. Both located on the island of Java, Jakarta and Bandung are the two most populous cities in Indonesia.
