On the afternoon of November 8, the Vietnamese futsal team played the semi-final match of the 2024 Southeast Asian futsal tournament against the Australian futsal team at Terminal 21 Korat Stadium in Thailand.

Shock for Vietnam futsal team

The Australian futsal team has improved a lot in recent years, especially when they lost to Vietnam in the last 3 times with the scores of 5-3, 2-0 and 5-1 respectively. Therefore, the fact that the Australian team led Vietnam 2-0 in the first half was a surprise for futsal fans. Sewell opened the score in the 7th minute and Rogan increased the score to 2-0 in the 20th minute. The two goals conceded by the Vietnamese futsal team were in the same scenario when the player scored the ball at the second goal post. Although they were behind, their bravery did not allow the Vietnamese futsal players to give up. In the second half, goalkeeper Pham Van Tu and pivo (the role of striker in fusal) Nguyen Da Hai played impressively to equalize 2-2 for the team of coach Diego Giustozzi. The turning point came when the Vietnamese futsal team started playing power-play from the second half. Nhan Gia Hung was forced to play the role of goalkeeper in the attacking style of play. When the clock reached the 10th minute, captain Wade Giovenali fouled Da Hai in the penalty area. The referee awarded Vietnam a 6m penalty and Minh Quang successfully kicked the ball to make it 1-2. In the 36th minute, Da Hai scored a close-range tap-in to help Vietnam equalize 2-2. Before the Vietnamese players could settle down, Australia served the ball and Jordan Guerreiro shot it into Nhat Trung's foot to take the lead 3-2.
Once again, Da Hai became the hero when he appeared at the right time to score the equalizer 3-3 in the 37th minute. After 40 minutes of official play, the two teams tied 3-3 so they had to play 2 extra periods (each period lasting 5 minutes).

Destiny 2 extra time

Before entering the extra time, both teams had 5 personal fouls and they were not cleared like in the beginning of the second half. Therefore, the team that committed the 6th foul would have to take a 10m penalty without a wall. At the end of the first extra time, number 9 Grant Lynch made a mistake in pushing someone. Vietnam was awarded a 10m penalty but Nhan Gia Hung could not defeat goalkeeper Domenic Badolato. When there were only 24 seconds left at the end of the first extra time, the Vietnamese team made an indirect foul by returning the ball to the goalkeeper illegally. Luckily, goalkeeper Van Tu's defense remained firm. The drama escalated when it only took 5 seconds at the beginning of the second extra time for pivo Thinh Phat to jump high and head the ball to raise the score to 4-3. The Australian futsal goalkeeper made a mistake when he went out of the penalty area to block the ball. The match did not stop when Lynch equalized 4-4 in the final minutes of the match. The Australian futsal team even received a 10m penalty but Scott Rogan missed the shot. Fate called the name of the Vietnamese futsal team when there were 40 seconds left in the match. Vietnam was awarded a 10m kick and Thinh Phat made no mistake in scoring the winning goal with a score of 5-4. Thus, the Vietnamese futsal team entered the final match of the 2024 Southeast Asian futsal tournament. They will meet the winner of the match between the Indonesian futsal team and the host Thai futsal team.
