University Admissions 2025: What are the benchmark scores?

TP - Yesterday (July 28), the registration of university admission wishes on the Ministry of Education and Training's admission system ended. The first admission season implemented according to the new regulations along with the innovations of the high school graduation exam has shown that candidates and universities must have flexible adaptations.

Deeply reduced floor points

One of the records of this year is that the floor scores of many universities have dropped to the lowest level in the past 10 years. The floor score of Hung Vuong University (HCMC) for the high school graduation exam method is 12/30 points. This is the lowest floor score in the country, the lowest of the school in many years and the score only occurred in the 3rd general exam period (before 2015).

Hung Yen University of Technical Education has a floor score of 13-14 points. The majors of Thanh Dong University (formerly Hai Duong province, now Hai Phong city) have a floor score of mostly 14/30 points. The University of Labor and Social Affairs has a similar floor score for its training majors.

Quang Trung University (formerly Binh Dinh province, now Gia Lai province) announced the minimum score of 13/30 points for the majors of business administration, accounting, finance - banking, construction engineering technology, hotel - restaurant management, tourism - travel service management; 14/30 points for the majors of English language, information technology, public health .

It is noted that this year, the number of universities that set the floor score from 15 - 16/30 points is higher than last year. The reason is that this year's score distribution for many subjects is lower than last year, especially subjects of the original combination of blocks A, B (Math, Biology, Chemistry) and the original combination of block D (English, Math). Another reason is that this year, universities are not allowed to consider early admissions and do not have the number of candidates admitted in advance, so they decided to set a low floor score with the mentality of having more than enough.

Northern schools with a floor score of 15-16/30 points include: Trade Union University, Women's Academy, Forestry University, Ethnic Academy, University of Natural Resources and Environment, Hanoi University of Industry and Commerce, University of Mining and Geology, some universities under Thai Nguyen University...

Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc believes that STEM education must be promoted and the current situation of too many admission combinations must be limited. Except for very specific majors and fields, according to Mr. Duc, subjects such as Math, Literature, Information Technology and Foreign Languages must be indispensable subjects in the assessment of university admission for all majors.

Benchmark forecast to fall

Due to the decrease in the score distribution this year, it is predicted that the standard scores of schools will decrease. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Head of the Department of Student Affairs and Communications, University of Science (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) said that the score distribution of the high school graduation exam this year has decreased slightly, affecting the standard scores of some majors of the school.

Admission combinations with Math and English subjects such as: Math, English, Physics (A01) or Math, English, Literature (D01) are likely to have their benchmark scores reduced. Some majors may be reduced by about 2 points, while the basic ones will be reduced by 0.5 points compared to last year.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc, University of Technology (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) said that the floor score is different from the admission standard score. This year, both of these threshold scores will decrease compared to 2024.

Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc commented that besides the general score of this year's high school exam, another factor affecting the admission process is the conversion of scores from other methods (ability assessment test results, thinking assessment test results, consideration of international certificates such as SAT, ACT, IELTS, etc.), or different combinations into one score and not dividing the quota for each admission method.

Professor Duc assessed that the top schools such as Hanoi University of Science and Technology, University of Technology (Hanoi National University), Foreign Trade University, National Economics University, and Medical and Pharmaceutical schools have many majors to choose from, have prestigious and quality training, and graduates have good job opportunities. The benchmark scores have decreased compared to previous years, but not too much. As for the majority of many schools, or for majors that last year had admission scores of 24-26 points, many majors will decrease sharply, from 2-4 points.

Nearly 850,000 candidates registered their wishes

After the end of the registration period for university and college admissions in 2025 on the common admissions system (5:00 p.m. on July 28), statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training showed that nearly 850,000 candidates registered out of a total of more than 1.1 million candidates taking the high school graduation exam, accounting for over 73%.

If we count the total number of wishes, the system records over 7.6 million wishes, with each candidate registering for an average of nearly 9 wishes. The Ministry of Education and Training assessed that the number of candidates registering for admission in 2025 increased by 115,892 candidates (due to candidates registering for admission to vocational colleges). The system is operating stably, and there are still some candidates who have submitted their registration information close to the end of the admission period, so the system is continuing to process them.

Need to innovate enrollment

Not having enough basis to perform equivalent conversion, Saigon University has just announced that it will not use the capacity assessment method to consider admission for 5 majors with the original combination A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry), C00 (Literature, History, Geography). It is worth mentioning that this announcement was made when candidates only have 3 days left to register their wishes on the common system of the Ministry of Education and Training.

According to the school's explanation, Ho Chi Minh City National University announced the equivalence percentile table between the competency assessment score and the high school graduation exam score according to the admission groups A01 (Math, Physics, English), B00 (Math, Chemistry, Biology), C01 (Math, Literature, Physics), but there was no equivalent conversion for the groups A00 and C00. Therefore, Saigon University does not have enough basis to perform the equivalent conversion, and at the same time does not use the competency assessment method to consider admission for these majors.

With this regulation, 5 majors of the school do not use the Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment method for admission, including: History, geography, information - library, applied mathematics, and data science.

The first year of implementing the conversion of scores between admission methods and admission combinations was full of confusion and concerns. Therefore, adjustments from the Ministry of Education and Training are needed for the following years. Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc said that universities with the percentile conversion method will have more trouble than last year. Candidates are also confused. However, these positive changes aim to improve quality and fairness.

“Along with the quality of the teaching staff, input quality is an important factor for universities to fulfill their mission of training talents, creating knowledge and implementing innovation,” said Mr. Duc.

Therefore, according to Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc, one of the contents that must be innovated in the coming time is to innovate university admissions in the direction of approaching international standards and integration. Professor Duc proposed to amend the Law on University Education, the high school graduation exam must be differentiated to select talents and must be well organized, safe and of high quality in all 4 stages: Exam questions, exam organization, exam grading and admission.

Revealing the trend of choosing wishes

Majors related to technology and economics associated with digital transformation are the choice of the majority of candidates in this year's admission season.

MSc. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Head of Admissions and Communications, Pacific University (Khanh Hoa) said that through admissions consulting, it can be seen that candidates are interested in the top groups of economic and management majors associated with digital transformation. For example, it is still a startup major but focuses on startup management, management in the digital transformation trend, related to banking must be associated with financial technology or digital banking.

MSc. Hung noted that local candidates this year are particularly interested in the semiconductor technology industry. This is an inevitable result of the propaganda of the press and training institutions. Thus, there are two groups of majors that candidates are particularly interested in this year's admission season: economics and semiconductor microchips. In addition, candidates grasp the local human resource needs associated with tourism development, so they are interested in Chinese, Korean, and Russian languages. These are the languages that popularly target tourists coming to Khanh Hoa for vacation.

Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Vice President of Duy Tan University (Da Nang) said that this year, candidates are interested in majors in the fields of computers and information technology, especially computer science, semiconductors, AI, data science; majors in the field of business and management with information technology elements such as digital marketing, fintech, digital business, etc. Majors in the supply chain group, engineering technology and health sciences are also of interest to many candidates. Next, candidates are interested in majors in the fields of multimedia communications or public relations.

In 2024, the Ministry of Education and Training reported that there are 5 groups of majors with the most admissions from candidates, including: Business and management, computers and information technology; engineering technology, humanities and health.

In particular, this year, candidates are more interested in the training environment, business relations and international factors... Dr. Vo Thanh Hai assessed that career guidance and changes in teaching and learning the 2018 general education program have had positive effects. According to Mr. Hai, candidates' trend in choosing majors is being greatly influenced by the country's socio-economic development. For example, candidates are very interested in majors in free trade zones, financial centers, and semiconductor centers in Da Nang and Vietnam.

Through the registration of candidates at the university's admission system, it can be seen that the economic and information technology groups are receiving the top attention of candidates. For example, only the number of candidates registering to convert IELTS certificates and international competency assessment certificates (ACT/SAT) at the National Economics University this year is up to over 21,000, not to mention the number of candidates applying for admission by competency assessment exams, high school graduation exams, while the total enrollment target for regular university admission of the school is 8,200.
