As of 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, at least 252,000 voters had cast ballots at early voting sites, nearly double the 136,000 who participated on the first day of early voting in the 2020 election, said Gabriel Sterling, Georgia's No. 2 election official.

Early voting, either in person or by mail, is becoming increasingly popular with American voters. Nearly 1 in 7 voters cast their ballots before Election Day 2020, according to the University of Florida's Election Research Lab.
However, many Republicans opposed expanding mail-in voting that year, arguing that it was less secure than voting in person. Mr. Trump has made claims about mail-in ballot fraud in the 2020 election.
Nationwide, 5.5 million Americans have already voted this year, according to Election Lab. By comparison, 27 million people had already cast ballots by this point in the 2020 election as voters sought to avoid crowded polling places during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Like several other states, Georgia has since tightened its mail-in voting laws, requiring voters who want to vote absentee to provide proof of identity and limiting the number of places they can send their ballots.
Georgia is one of seven battleground states expected to play a decisive role in deciding the outcome of this year's US presidential election.
