Mysterious UAV in US 'does not hinder Santa'

The commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) joked that the recent mysterious UAV incident in the US did not cause any difficulties for Santa Claus's gift-delivery activities.

"Of course we're concerned about drones and anything else in the air. But I don't see any obstacles for Santa this year," US Air Force General Gregory Guillot, commander of NORAD, told Fox News on December 24.

Guillot’s remarks came on Christmas Eve and were related to NORAD’s decades-long tradition of “tracking” Santa Claus on a simulated system. Guillot also sought to reassure the public about recent reports of mysterious UAVs appearing in the US state of New Jersey.

In 1955, a Colorado newspaper ran an ad for children to call Santa, but it misprinted the NORAD hotline number. Former NORAD director Colonel Harry Shoup picked up the phone and learned of the mistake, but not wanting to disappoint the children, he chatted and said he was “tracking Santa’s location.” Since then, the joint US-Canadian military agency NORAD has deployed a computer simulation system that shows the path of Santa and his reindeer.

This activity is continued by NORAD this year, when internet users can access the website NORAD Tracks Santa to follow Santa's "gift delivery" journey around the world . On the morning of December 25 (Vietnam time), Santa Claus traveled through states in the US and Canada and a total of more than 6 billion gifts were distributed.

Canadian Air Force Major General William Radiff, NORAD's director of operations, joked that the agency was able to track Santa in part because NORAD's infrared-sensing satellites could detect signals from "Rudolph's nose" (the lead reindeer of Santa's herd of nine reindeer with a distinctive red nose), according to AFP.
