UEFA causes controversy when announcing referee for Euro final

(Dan Tri) - The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA)'s assignment of a French referee to officiate the Euro 2024 final has created mixed reactions.
UEFA has announced that French referee Francois Letexier will officiate the Euro 2024 final between Spain and England. The match will take place at 02:00 on July 15 at the Olympiastadion Berlin.

This is the 35-year-old referee's fourth match at Euro 2024. Both assistants to Francois Letexier are French referees, Cyril Mugnier and Mehdi Rahmouni. The fourth referee is Szymon Marciniak (Poland). UEFA's assignment of referee Francois Letexier to referee the Euro 2024 final has created mixed reactions. On social media, many Spanish fans are unhappy with this decision. Spanish fans believe that UEFA should not have assigned a French referee to referee a Spanish match. The Spanish team just lost to La Roja in the Euro 2024 semi-finals, so there is no avoiding resentment. At Euro 2024, referee Francois Letexier refereed a Spanish match when they won 4-1 against Georgia in the round of 16. After 3 matches at Euro 2024, the French referee has issued 10 yellow cards. He has not given a red card or awarded a penalty.

Referee Francois Letexier has been FIFA certified since 2017. He is currently listed as a senior referee by UEFA. He has refereed many important matches in the Champions League. Last season, the 35-year-old referee officiated the match between Real Madrid and Man City in the quarter-finals. He was also assigned as the fourth referee in the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Dortmund. In addition, Mr. Francois Letexier also refereed the 2023 European Super Cup between Man City and Sevilla. According to many sources, UEFA initially planned to choose Italian referee Daniele Orsato to referee the Euro 2024 final, but this referee withdrew due to injury. Therefore, UEFA had to change the plan.
