UEFA will not replace the referee for the Champions League final after investigation

This season's Champions League final between Man City and Inter Milan in Istanbul (Turkey) will take place at 2am on June 11. Previously, UEFA announced an investigation and intended to replace the main referee Szymon Marciniak (appointed on May 22), due to allegations related to political issues.

"UEFA has been actively investigating allegations surrounding Mr Szymon Marciniak's participation in an event held in Katowice (Poland) on 29 May. These allegations are taken extremely seriously by UEFA and the entire football community. We categorically reject the values promoted by a group linked to this conference.

Following a thorough review, we have received a statement from Mr Marciniak expressing his deepest apologies and providing a clear explanation for his involvement in the event. Following Mr Marciniak's statement, UEFA has taken note of his deep apology and clear explanation. Based on the information provided, UEFA can confirm that Mr Marciniak remains the referee for the 2023 Champions League Final and will fulfil his role in the match," UEFA said in a statement.

Referee Szymon Marciniak has officiated eight Champions League matches this season

Referee Szymon Marciniak, 42, also officiated the 2022 World Cup final between France and Argentina last December. This season, the Polish referee has officiated eight Champions League matches, including the second leg of the semi-final between Man City and Real Madrid.
