Dozens of people were injured when Russian missiles hit a shopping and entertainment complex in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, Ukrainian officials said, while Moscow authorities reported damage at industrial sites after a large-scale drone attack on the Russian capital.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is taking a new turn on the ground as both sides increase military activity. Earlier on September 2, Ukrainian military officials announced that their air defense units had repelled a Russian missile attack on the capital Kiev.

Following the Kharkiv attack on September 1, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again called on allies to allow his forces to deploy Western-supplied missiles deeper across the border to reduce the possibility of Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilian sites.

“All the necessary forces of the world must be involved to stop it. This does not require extraordinary forces, but rather great courage from leaders, the courage to provide Ukraine with everything it needs to defend itself,” he wrote on Telegram.

It has been nearly a month since Ukraine launched an offensive in Russia's Kursk region, even as Russian troops are said to be making advances in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Donetsk region.

Kiev has urged Washington to lift restrictions on using weapons supplied by its allies to strike deep inside Russia. Ukraine argues that such attacks would significantly hamper Moscow’s ability to continue its moves against Ukraine.

Senior officials in President Zelensky’s administration were in Washington last week, calling on the US to provide him with “real and full capabilities” to protect the country.

Regarding the information on the fighting on September 2, according to Ukrainska Pravda , Ukrainian air surveillance forces detected and tracked 58 air targets (35 missiles of various types and 23 attack UAVs):

  • 16 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles were launched from Russia's Bryansk, Voronezh and Kursk provinces;
  • 14 Kh-101 cruise missiles were launched from Tu-95MS strategic bombers from Russia's Volgograd region;
  • Four S-300/S-400 guided air defense missiles were launched from Russia's Belgorod province;
  • An unidentified missile was launched from Russia's Belgorod province;
  • 23 Shahed-131/136 attack UAVs were launched from the Russian city of Primorsko-Akhtarsk.

Electronic warfare units of the Air Force and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian defense forces are believed to have shot down the following targets: 9 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles; 13 Kh-101 cruise missiles; 20 Shahed-131/136 attack UAVs.

In addition, due to the Ukrainian defense forces' initiative to counterattack, a Kh-101 cruise missile and three attack UAVs did not reach their target and were lost on radar. The information is being confirmed. The fighting took place in the Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhzhia provinces.
