Ukraine dismisses air force commander

Báo Sài Gòn Giải phóngBáo Sài Gòn Giải phóng31/08/2024

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has fired the country's air force commander Mykola Oleshchuk, shortly after the Ukrainian military announced that an F-16 fighter jet had crashed during combat, killing the pilot.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian General Staff said that Lieutenant General Anatoliy Kryvonozhka will temporarily command the country's air force.

President Zelensky did not specify the reason for this decision, but the move came just a day after the Ukrainian military announced that an F-16 fighter jet had crashed during combat, killing the pilot. It is worth noting that many sources from both Ukraine and Russia confirmed that this first case of an F-16 fighter jet being shot down on Ukrainian territory was due to the country's own air defense forces mistakenly shooting it down.

In another development, the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated on the sidelines of the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council that Ukraine is not allowed to use weapons provided by Rome to attack Russian territory; emphasizing that Italy still maintains its stance on weapons provided to Ukraine and that Rome "is not at war with Russia".

On August 29, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Kiev hopes to reach a consensus with its partners on the use of long-range missiles against targets in Russia. Being allowed to attack targets in Russia would create strategic instability for Moscow. Meanwhile, the appearance of F-16 aircraft in Ukraine, especially when allowed to shoot down aerial targets in Russian skies, would significantly strengthen air defense capabilities.
