(CLO) Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico said that Ukraine could lose about 30% of its territory due to the conflict with Russia, and would not be invited by the US and its allies to join NATO.

"I think Ukraine will lose a third of its territory, but it could receive some security guarantees, such as the presence of foreign troops. If that is seen as a positive result for Ukraine, I believe the people of this country will feel betrayed," Fico said in an interview with the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo.

Mr Fico said the solution to the current conflict lies in achieving a ceasefire and promoting peace talks. "Ukraine has put itself in a situation that cannot have a good outcome for the country. They will lose territory and will not be invited to join NATO," he said.

The Slovak prime minister also warned that the consequences of the conflict would severely affect Ukraine's internal stability.

On the Russian side, on December 8, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirmed that Moscow is ready to participate in negotiations. However, to move closer to peace, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy needs to cancel the decree banning negotiations with Russia, and at the same time issue instructions to resume dialogue based on the Istanbul agreements, while taking into account the actual situation on the ground.

Earlier, in a meeting with the Russian Foreign Ministry on June 14, President Vladimir Putin outlined the conditions for resolving the conflict. The conditions include Ukraine withdrawing its troops from Donbas and Novorossiya, abandoning its intention to join NATO, as well as pledging to remain neutral and not possess nuclear weapons.

Russia also demands that Western sanctions be lifted and that the rights and freedoms of Russian-speaking people be guaranteed.
