IUD goes into bladder

VnExpressVnExpress03/07/2023

Nam Dinh: A 40-year-old female patient had abdominal pain and painful urination. The doctor discovered that the IUD was inside the bladder, which is considered very rare.

The patient said that she had an IUD inserted 7 years ago, but later discovered that the IUD was not in her abdomen. At the 108 Military Central Hospital, abdominal CT scan and cystoscopy results showed that the foreign object was a T-shaped IUD with stones in it, inside her bladder.

"Foreign objects in the bladder are very rare, especially cases where an IUD moves into the bladder are even rarer," Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Duc, Head of the Department of Urology, said on July 3.

After consultation, the doctors used laser energy to break up the stones around the IUD and remove the foreign object. After 3 days, the patient was stable, and the symptoms of pain, hematuria, and painful urination were gone.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Duc said that the urethra and bladder are hollow organs, when foreign objects are accidentally or intentionally placed in, the cause may be a medical incident or the patient himself placing the foreign object. Long-term bladder foreign objects will cause surrounding stones to stick, urinary tract infections and can lead to more serious diseases such as abscess formation or sepsis.
