Previously, on November 7, Hue Central Hospital received a newborn baby with jaundice from Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province.
Immediately, doctors urgently examined and conducted in-depth tests.
The conclusion showed that the child had severe hemolysis due to blood group incompatibility between mother and child.
Shortly after birth, the patient's skin turned yellow all the way down to the soles of his feet, accompanied by severe anemia and an alarming increase in the bilirubin index (a bile-colored pigment - PV).
If not treated immediately, the child may suffer from severe anemia, heart failure, irreversible brain damage, affecting the child's entire life and endangering his or her life.
Doctors quickly took emergency measures, the child was continuously exposed to phototherapy, transfused with washed red blood cells of group O, transfused with immune antibodies and fresh plasma. However, the bilirubin index in the child's blood continued to increase abnormally.
The team of experts and doctors at Hue Central Hospital consulted and decided to replace the baby's blood at 50 hours of age via the umbilical artery-venous route.
After 2 hours of continuous blood transfusion, the patient's condition began to show positive changes. In addition to blood transfusion, doctors also applied phototherapy and immune antibody transfusion.
Gradually, the patient's bilirubin level dropped to a safe level. The patient has been recovering day by day and is now alert and in stable health.
