Scientists have discovered that the reason this land is so unusual is because of underground holes filled with methane gas.
That is Belyy Island off the coast of southern Siberia. On this land, experts found many methane gas bubbles that appeared overnight. Many of them burst and left deep holes on the ground as if someone had just dug them.
However, there was no trace of the excavated soil next to the hole. On the contrary, with the holes that still had bubbles, the top layer of soil when stepped on always felt like walking on clouds. Every time the bubbles burst, a very high density of methane gas would escape from the hole.

According to experts, the strange phenomenon on Belyy Island is due to the impact of climate change in this area. The temperature on the island has increased significantly. As a result of climate change, methane gas penetrates the thin areas of Siberian permafrost and creates underground holes.
After measuring, they found that the CO2 level in these bubble holes was 20 times higher than normal. The methane concentration was 200 times higher than average. According to experts, Belyy Island is quite dangerous because these bubble holes can explode at any time.
One researcher described the feeling of stepping on the gas pits: “ It felt like standing on a jellyfish, this is a phenomenon we have never seen before.”
Scientists continue to research the dangers of these mysterious gas craters as well as solutions to reduce the consequences they leave behind.
