Vung Tau City's Back Beach is packed with beachgoers on the afternoon of April 28.

According to Agoda’s survey data conducted since April, Vung Tau is the top destination for Vietnamese tourists to avoid the heat. Phan Thiet is second, followed by Da Lat, Nha Trang and Da Nang. These locations all have cool climates and natural scenery.

Survey on Vietnamese tourists' travel destination selection trends in hot weather conditions based on domestic tourists' searches and bookings at domestic tourist destinations from April to August.

Accordingly, total searches for domestic destinations in April increased by 12% compared to the same period last year. Coastal and mountainous destinations were the most searched, accounting for 80% of the top 10 searches. The top 5 hot-weather destinations included 4 coastal destinations and 1 mountainous destination.

The ranking of top places to escape the heat shows that beach tourism is a trend favored by domestic tourists in the face of the harsh sunlight. In addition, mountainous areas with cool climates such as Da Lat are also popular.

Vu Ngoc Lam, Country Director of Agoda Vietnam, said the search data showed the resilience and adaptability of Vietnamese travelers in the face of extreme weather conditions. The preference for beach and mountain destinations reflects the need for comfort and respite from the heat, and underscores the importance of flexible domestic travel solutions.

"Many visitors choose coastal and mountainous destinations not only showing current travel habits but also contributing to shaping the overall travel trend during the peak summer season," said Mr. Lam.

According to Mr. Lam, Vietnamese tourists still have strong interest in domestic destinations, in the context that many people choose to travel abroad to avoid high domestic airfares.

Previously, during the April 30-May 1 holiday, beach tourism destinations had an outstanding number of visitors and revenue, many places saw a sudden increase in the number of visitors. In particular, beaches in Ba Ria - Vung Tau attracted about 626,000 visitors, an increase of 25% over the same period, with room capacity reaching more than 90% of the whole province. The number of visitors to Vung Tau City alone accounted for 46% of the total number of visitors in the whole province, an increase of 38% over last year.

Also during the hot weather period across the country, tourists seek places to escape the heat such as the mountains and plateaus. Places such as Sa Pa (Lao Cai), Da Lat (Lam Dong) or Mang Den ( Kon Tum ) are crowded but the rate of guests staying is not as high as in coastal cities.

In October 2023, Ho Chi Minh City-based market research firm Outbox Company also announced the ranking of domestic destinations most favored by Vietnamese tourists in the third quarter, with Ba Ria - Vung Tau also topping the list. In the first two quarters of last year, this destination also won the championship thanks to its convenient location and proximity to Ho Chi Minh City. Ba Ria - Vung Tau was rated by tourists as "having beautiful scenery and reasonable costs suitable for the tastes of current Vietnamese people".
