Washington wants India to use US nuclear technology

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên12/02/2025

During a meeting in Paris (France) on February 11, US Vice President JD Vance and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed how the US can help India diversify its energy supply through investment in US nuclear technology, according to Reuters citing an announcement from the White House.

The exchange comes ahead of Prime Minister Modi's scheduled meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on February 13.

The New Delhi government has proposed amending India’s nuclear liability law to attract foreign and private investment in the closely guarded sector. Reuters quoted analysts as saying that for years, the US has viewed India as a counterweight to China’s growing global influence.

In another development, Reuters yesterday quoted a White House official as saying that the 25% tariffs that President Trump plans to impose on imported steel and aluminum will be added to other duties on goods from Canada, resulting in a total of 50% tariffs. A Canadian government source said Ottawa had not been notified of the double tariffs.

Earlier this month, Mr. Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on most Canadian imports. However, that tariff was suspended for 30 days last week. Mr. Trump’s tariff decision has drawn angry reactions from many countries, including Canada, Mexico and the European Union.
