The Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) cited data from the Vietnam Customs Department, saying that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports in May reached 616.5 million USD, up 17.8% compared to April, but down 20.7% compared to the same period last year. In the first 5 months, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports reached 2.3 billion USD, down 13.5% compared to the same period in 2024.

Compared to May 2024, the export value of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables to the markets of China, South Korea, and Thailand decreased last month. In contrast, exports to the US, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) increased sharply.

Particularly in China, in the past month, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports to this billion-people market continued to decline compared to the same period last year, reaching 333.4 million USD, down 39.7% compared to the same period in 2024.

In the first 5 months, the export value of fruits and vegetables to China decreased by 35.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching 1.11 billion USD, accounting for 48.2% of the total export turnover of this item of Vietnam.

According to statistics from the China Customs Administration, in the first four months of the year, China imported 7.8 billion USD worth of vegetables, fruits and processed products, down 11.7% compared to the same period last year. Chile, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and New Zealand are the five largest suppliers of vegetables and fruits to China.

Of which, Chile was the largest supplier in the first four months of the year, reaching 2.9 billion USD, down 12.2% over the same period last year and accounting for 36.9% of China's fruit and vegetable import market share.

Vietnam was the third largest supplier of vegetables, fruits and processed products to China in the first four months of the year, reaching 908.2 million USD, down 3.9% over the same period last year. Vietnam's market share in China's total fruit and vegetable import value accounted for 11.7%.

According to businesses, the reason for the sharp decline in exports to China is due to durian - a staple product facing difficulties due to China's tightening of inspections. Not only durian, exports of mango, banana, jackfruit, dragon fruit, and passion fruit have also dropped sharply.

Meanwhile, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports to the US in May reached 53.58 million USD, up 25.5% over the previous month and 63.3% over the same period last year. In the first 5 months, exports of this item to the US reached 207.8 million USD, up 65.2% over the same period last year.

In particular, the Import-Export Department said that the export turnover of fruits and vegetables to the Italian market increased sharply compared to the same period in 2024, with an increase of 303.6%, reaching 10.8 million USD. "This growth is an important driving force, helping to partly offset the decline in other markets and affirming the adaptability and market diversification of the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable industry," the Import-Export Department assessed.
