The cultural identity passed down through many generations has helped them step forward, brought them to new lands and displayed the beauty and cultural diversity of the country and people of Vietnam.
Until now, artist Rcom Bus (Pleiku Roh village, Pleiku ward) still remembers clearly the performance at the 22nd World Sound Festival held in Korea in 2023. At that time, he was the youngest artist of the troupe, and it was his first time going abroad.
The event was attended by 14 groups from 11 countries in different regions of the world. Along with modern music performances, artists from some groups also performed folk music with the theme “Together to Preserve and Restore”.
7 performances showing the cultural diversity of the Jrai art troupe left many beautiful impressions on the audience and actors and artists of the troupes.
These are gong songs, solo and ensemble performances of traditional musical instruments, folk songs... imbued with folk art such as: Greetings of solidarity, Good morning, Full moon night, Brave young man, Bringing water to the village, Warm and prosperous village...
With the vibrant spirit of the primeval forest, Rcom Bus and 13 Jrai artists of the whole troupe created a performance that completely captured the audience's emotions.
Artisan Rcom Bus said: “The first time the audience saw the artist wearing a loincloth and performing traditional musical instruments and gongs, they were very excited. We were happy to have the opportunity to introduce our ethnic culture to the provinces in the country, and it was even more honorable to promote it abroad.”
Having repeatedly “brought bells to strike foreign lands”, Meritorious Artisan Ro Cham Tih (Jut 1 village, Ia Hrung commune) is considered the most effective cultural exporter in the province. Stemming from his love for Jrai culture, he learned from the elders in the village how to make and perform traditional musical instruments, how to build poles, communal houses, and how to play gongs.
Mr. Ro Cham Tih never expected that one day his national culture would take him so far, receiving so much love, from England, Australia, Finland to Korea, Hong Kong...
Under the hands of talented artisans, simple bamboo is transformed into t'rung, ting ning, kơ ní, klek klok instruments to tell the audience stories about love of life, beautiful love between couples in deep forests and streams.
Artisan Ro Cham Tih said: Among his trips, the most memorable was the time he participated in a performance by a Vietnamese art troupe in the UK in 2013 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, with the participation of high-ranking representatives from the two countries.
The more he travels, the more proud he becomes of the uniqueness of the Jrai people in particular and the Vietnamese people in general in a world that always respects cultural diversity.
“Once after I finished performing, the audience rushed up to give me some fresh flower garlands to wear around my neck. I brought these garlands back to Vietnam to keep as a souvenir,” he said.
In addition to performing music, the bamboo wind chimes and small t'rung he brought with him were always sold out by audiences from all over the world. In some places, he was also asked to leave his mark with the "constructions" he meticulously built on the spot, such as the pole and the water t'rung (operated by water power).
The positivity of artisans in enhancing exchanges and promoting the image of the country and Vietnamese people abroad... is one of the ways to realize important goals in the Government's "Cultural Development Strategy to 2030", thereby identifying culture as a resource, a source of national development, contributing to consolidating "soft power" and affirming the national position.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Van, former Director of the Gia Lai Provincial Museum (old), suggested that the province should continue to pay attention to sending artisan groups abroad to perform. Along with that, it should create the most favorable opportunities for international researchers interested in the culture of ethnic groups in Gia Lai to access and conduct in-depth research, thereby helping the unique traditional cultural values become increasingly known to many people. That is a very effective way of exporting culture in two directions.
