On June 8, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Ngan, Deputy Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, Cho Ray Hospital, said that the three suspected cases of mushroom poisoning transferred from Tay Ninh were members of the same family. The patients included a husband, wife and 17-year-old daughter.
According to the information, about 3-4 days before being admitted to the hospital, the patient and his wife picked mushrooms and stir-fried them with squash to eat. After eating about 8-12 hours, the husband, wife, and daughter suffered from stomachaches, vomiting, and diarrhea, and their condition became increasingly worse. The family was transferred to a local hospital and then to Ho Chi Minh City.
Patients are treated at Cho Ray Hospital
During the transfer, the husband had difficulty breathing and respiratory failure, and was intubated and given a balloon pump. However, he died in the Emergency Department of Cho Ray Hospital. The wife and daughter were transferred to the Tropical Diseases Department in a state of liver failure, very high liver enzymes, and blood clotting disorders.
According to Dr. Ngan, it is suspected that these symptoms are due to poisoning after eating mushrooms. However, it is not yet possible to confirm what type of mushroom and what toxins it is, and it will take more time to get information from the family.
After 2 days of treatment, the daughter's health has improved, but she needs to be monitored for liver function and blood clotting disorders. Meanwhile, the wife is still in critical condition, with liver dysfunction and worsening.
"Recently, the hospital has received many cases of mushroom poisoning. Therefore, we recommend that people should be careful when picking mushrooms because they can accidentally eat poisonous mushrooms, which contain many toxins that affect different organ systems and can even cause death," Dr. Ngan advised.
