On October 7, Xinhua News Agency reported that the World Health Organization (WHO) said that a cholera outbreak in Ethiopia has killed 300 people.

According to WHO, the cholera outbreak that began on August 27, 2022, has now spread to 113 districts in 10 regions of the country. The number of deaths from cholera has increased to 300, accounting for 1.24% of the total number of cases. Response measures have partly brought the cholera outbreak under control, but cases continue to appear in some districts.

The outbreak comes amid low cholera vaccination coverage. Seven million people live in cholera outbreak areas in Ethiopia, while expanding vaccination coverage is hampered by a lack of funding.

According to Ethiopian government statistics, so far, just over 6 million people in 54 districts have received one dose of cholera vaccine.

To combat cholera in Ethiopia, WHO said that in addition to promoting vaccination, it is necessary to pay attention to long-term solutions to address the root causes of the disease such as eliminating poor quality drinking water and poor sanitation.
