Ahead of his scheduled visit to South Africa to attend the BRICS Summit in August, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone call with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on June 11.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Ramaphosa briefed Modi on the African Leaders’ Peace Initiative. The two also discussed cooperation within BRICS, besides reviewing a number of bilateral, regional and global issues.

Amid the ongoing complex Russia-Ukraine conflict, Prime Minister Modi stressed that India supports all initiatives to ensure lasting peace and stability in Ukraine and reiterated New Delhi's consistent call for pursuing dialogue and diplomacy.

During the phone call, President Ramaphosa also expressed full support for India's initiatives under its G20 Presidency this year.

South Africa currently holds the rotating presidency of the BRICS bloc in 2023.

Last week, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was in Cape Town to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers' meeting, to finalize the agenda for the 15th BRICS Summit in Durban.

Notably, the upcoming agenda includes plans to expand BRICS membership and a common currency.
