Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says a suspected terrorist has threatened him and his family, stating his intention to kill members of the ruling Labor Party.
According to Prime Minister Albanese, he and his family were among those threatened by an extremist statement by 19-year-old terrorist suspect Jordan Patten, which clearly stated his intention to kill MPs of the ruling Labor Party. Speaking to reporters in Canberra, Prime Minister Albanese emphasized: "There is no place for extremism in Australia."
Patten was arrested by Counter Terrorism Squad on June 26 in Newcastle, about 100km north of Sydney, after allegedly entering the office of Labor MP Tim Crakanthorp with a knife and equipment. Patten has been charged with preparing or planning a terrorist act.
Authorities said after Patten's arrest they found a manifesto expressing anti-immigration, anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim views and a hate list targeting the Labor Party and Prime Minister Albanese.
Under Australian law, anyone convicted of preparing or planning an act of terrorism can be sentenced to life in prison.
