(CLO) On November 18, in Can Tho City, People's Representative Newspaper organized a workshop on 'Promoting credit for key agricultural products, bringing the Mekong Delta to rapid and sustainable development'.
In her opening speech at the workshop, Editor-in-Chief of the People's Representative Newspaper Pham Thi Thanh Huyen stated that, with its special position as the country's key agricultural production region, the Mekong Delta (MD) has affirmed its role, contributing great value to the national economy and ensuring food security for the country. However, in its development journey, the MD is facing countless challenges: from the severity of climate change, salinity intrusion, to difficulties in transport infrastructure, logistics and access to capital.

Editor-in-Chief Pham Thi Thanh Huyen emphasized: The workshop aims to find effective solutions to promote credit for key agricultural products in the Mekong Delta, a fertile and rich land that has been closely associated with the agricultural life of the whole country for generations.
The State Bank's recent announcement said that the results of implementing a number of credit policies to serve agricultural and rural development have not been as expected. For example: loans without collateral only account for about 20% of outstanding agricultural and rural loans; outstanding loans for high-tech agriculture, production under linkage models, and value chains have not seen many changes. Assets securing loans are low-value agricultural land, construction works on land that are slow to be granted ownership certificates, and difficult to value - are still major obstacles.
In such a context, Editor-in-Chief Pham Thi Thanh Huyen affirmed that today's workshop is an opportunity for us to look at and carefully analyze practical difficulties, thereby proposing breakthrough solutions. Solutions on financial support mechanisms and policies, preferential credit packages, and especially forms of credit guarantees from the State can help reduce risks and encourage banks to expand credit to the Mekong Delta region.
At the workshop, delegates gave frank and enthusiastic contributions. This will be a rich source of information, helping to build appropriate, effective and highly feasible policies and solutions for the Mekong Delta to continuously rise and affirm its position on the regional and international agricultural map.
Many delegates said that for the Mekong Delta to develop sustainably, it requires not only efforts from farmers and businesses but also synchronous support from the State, credit institutions and close and synchronous coordination between relevant parties. Promoting credit for agricultural products is not only a financial solution, but also a long-term commitment, contributing to the implementation of sustainable development goals, stabilizing people's lives and enhancing the position of agricultural products in the Mekong Delta on the world map.
