Hanoi Moi Weekend reporter had an interview with Associate Professor, Doctor, journalist Nguyen The Ky - former General Director of Voice of Vietnam , Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council to have a clearer view of this story.

- Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Ky, as a journalist who has been involved in revolutionary journalism for many years, how do you feel about the role and mission of journalists in the current period?
- Revolutionary journalists in today's era are facing many great challenges but at the same time have unprecedented opportunities for development in history. Their role is not only to transmit information but also to be soldiers on the ideological front, a bridge between the Party, the State and the people. The mission of revolutionary journalists is not only to truthfully reflect the reality of social life, but also to contribute to building and spreading cultural values, ethics and national spirit.
In the integration period, when information is transmitted quickly and multi-dimensionally, journalists must maintain a firm ideological stance, be steadfast in the truth and social responsibility. They need to be pioneers in discovering and praising achievements, encouraging efforts to build the country, and at the same time speaking out against negative phenomena, corruption and waste. That is how the press contributes to strengthening people's trust and promoting the country's sustainable development. In addition, in the context of modern media with rapidly developing digital platforms, journalists must constantly innovate their thinking and skills to master technology, improve the effectiveness of information transmission and maintain the identity of revolutionary journalism.
- In the context of strong digital transformation, in your opinion, what should revolutionary press do to maintain its role in guiding public opinion and at the same time keep up with modern trends?
- Digital transformation is an inevitable trend and brings opportunities as well as challenges to revolutionary journalism. To maintain its role in guiding public opinion, the press needs to be steadfast in its core values: Honesty, objectivity, social responsibility and national cultural identity. At the same time, the press must also know how to take advantage of the power of digital technology to innovate the way of doing journalism. This requires press agencies to invest in technical infrastructure, improve information technology capacity for reporters and editors, and build attractive multimedia products that are highly interactive with readers. Developing digital media platforms, social networks, and mobile applications are indispensable steps to attract and retain readers, especially young people - the generation that receives information in a completely new way.
However, in addition to applying technology, the press needs to be very alert to avoid falling into the “trap” of distorted information and fake news. Journalists need to improve their information verification skills, maintain their political stance and the purpose of revolutionary journalism, and not be swayed by temporary trends or commercial pressures. Only by harmoniously combining traditional identity and modern technology can the press truly maintain its role in guiding public opinion in the digital age.
- You have shared a lot about “cultural identity” in journalism. Could you please explain more about this concept and why preserving identity is especially important in today’s media environment?
- Cultural identity in journalism is the sum of elements of content, language, style, perspective and reflection of social life in a unique and characteristic way of a nation. That is the soul, the unique voice that helps the press not to be dissolved in the global information flow. Preserving cultural identity not only helps create a unique mark for the national press but is also a way to protect and promote the traditional values, spirit and ethics of the nation in the integration process.
In today's media environment, when cultural exchange is increasingly widespread and rapid, maintaining journalistic identity helps clarify ideological directions, avoid information confusion and protect cultural diversity. This is also a way for the press to promote its role in building people, personalities and improving the spiritual life of society. If the press loses its cultural identity, it means losing its voice, gradually losing its trust and influence on the public. Therefore, I always consider preserving and promoting cultural identity as the top priority of journalists, especially in the era of strong integration and digital transformation.
- As someone who has experienced journalism, culture and politics, how do you evaluate the relationship between journalism and the work of preserving and promoting national cultural values?
- The press and culture always exist in a mutually supportive and complementary relationship. The press is not only a channel of information but also a bridge to convey and promote traditional cultural values to the public, especially in the current context when global culture is increasingly penetrating deeply. The press plays a very important role in raising public awareness of the value and importance of preserving and promoting the unique cultural beauty of the nation, thereby creating a spreading power, motivating society to join hands to protect and develop culture.
Cultural articles, programs and reports not only help reflect diverse aspects of spiritual life, but also contribute to warning about the risks and challenges facing cultural heritage, such as fading, excessive commercialization or the uncontrolled explosion of foreign values. From a political perspective, the press is also a tool to affirm the role and position of culture in the national development strategy, contributing to building Vietnamese people with knowledge, rich identity and ethics. I believe that the connection between the press and cultural work is a key factor to protect and promote national identity in the new era.
- Sir, in your journey as a journalist, you will surely not forget many works as well as truly impressive working moments?
The journey of journalism is a journey of constantly recording, reflecting and accompanying social life. For me, the most profound impression is the articles that truly reflect the lives of people during the renovation period, the stories of endurance, rise and the desire for change of the Vietnamese people. There are moments when I directly contact and listen to difficult lives, resilient examples who still maintain faith, patriotism and desire for freedom, I clearly see that the mission of a journalist is not only to tell stories but also to preserve, inspire and contribute to changing reality. Those articles have helped me to better understand the value of truth, humanity and social responsibility of journalism. It is these practical experiences that have created profound meaning in my career, making me always ponder and strive my best to contribute to building an increasingly developed revolutionary journalism.
- Do you have any advice for young journalists to help them both have a solid career and maintain a "pure heart and bright mind"?
- Modern journalism life is always full of pressure and fierce competition, but the most important thing I want to tell young journalists is to keep a "clear heart, bright mind". A "clear heart" means to maintain honesty and responsibility, not to lose professional ethics for personal gain or commercial pressure. A "bright mind" means to be alert, sharp in judgment, constantly creative to do the job with high expertise, avoid stereotypes and follow tricks to attract views and likes.
Young journalists need to constantly study and improve their knowledge of politics, culture, society and new technological skills to adapt to the rapid changes of modern media. At the same time, they must be imbued with the spirit of serving the people, doing journalism for the development of the country, for the truth and social justice. Only in this way can young journalists build a sustainable career, gain respect from society and contribute to making revolutionary journalism forever an honest, objective voice with strong influence in the new era.
Thank you very much!
