Former President Donald Trump is considering options to launch a new large-scale economic attack on China if he returns to the White House, the Washington Post reported on January 28, warning that this could lead to a global trade war.

Accordingly, sources said that Mr. Trump has discussed with his advisers the possibility of imposing a 60% tariff on all imports from China if he is re-elected.

The US newspaper quoted experts as saying that this move could lead to significant disruption to both the US and global economies, much more serious than the impact of the trade war during Mr. Trump's first term.

The US currently imposes a 25% tariff on $300 billion worth of Chinese imports.

Relations between Washington and Beijing have deteriorated significantly under the Donald Trump administration, as a trade war between the world's two largest economies has erupted.

Under current President Joe Biden, the situation has not improved as a number of incidents, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan and the destruction of a Chinese balloon in US airspace, have led to a new round of diplomatic confrontation.

The Biden administration has recently taken some steps to normalize US-China relations. Senior US and Chinese officials have held several meetings, but the relationship between the two countries has yet to return to a fully stable orbit.
