VnExpressVnExpress14/10/2023

France The two most popular tourist attractions in France, the Louvre Museum and the Palace of Versailles, had to evacuate visitors and close on October 14 due to bomb threats.

Alarms sounded throughout the Louvre and the underground shopping mall beneath the Louvre's glass pyramid (located in the museum's Napoleon Courtyard) as the evacuation was ordered. The museum's press office said no one was injured. Police searched the museum after receiving a bomb threat. The Louvre, home to masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa, receives between 30,000 and 40,000 visitors a day and several million a year.

Police blocked all entrances and underground entrances as people poured out. Many people were in a hurry, but some stopped to take photos, while others appeared confused about what was happening. Police said the major Paris train station, Gare de Lyon, was evacuated after an explosive was found. The museum was closed for security reasons.

The former royal palace in Versailles also received a bomb threat on the same day and quickly evacuated visitors and staff who were inside the palace and its vast surrounding gardens.

The evacuation of two of the world's most visited tourist destinations comes as France is on its highest security alert following a deadly attack at a school on October 13 and global tensions over the Israel-Hamas war.

On the morning of October 14, President Macron's office announced the mobilization of 7,000 soldiers to strengthen security across the country.
