Speaking at a press conference in the capital La Paz, Mr. Del Castillo emphasized that among those arrested was General Marcelo Zegarra, the commander of the Air Force, who was dismissed, when he appeared at the prosecutor's office with his lawyers. The other three arrested were all military officers.

According to official information, up to this point, the Commanders of the Army, Navy and Air Force have participated in the armored attack and siege of the Bolivian Presidential Palace with a coup plot, led by the Commander-in-Chief of the Army Juan José Zúñiga.

Mr. Zúñiga was dismissed and arrested shortly after the failed coup, along with Navy Vice Admiral Juan Arnez, who was arrested on June 26.

Minister Del Castillo said authorities will continue to investigate to clarify the coup plot against leftist President Luis Arce, who has been in power since late 2020.

Previously, on June 27, Interior Minister Castillo confirmed that the country's police had arrested at least 17 military officers involved in organizing a coup plot in the South American country.

Bolivia's state news agency Abi quoted Mr Castillo as saying at a press conference: "The Bolivian police have enough information to expose 'the entire network' involved in the coup attempt."

The official revealed that testimony showed that the coup plot had been planned since May 2024.
