Some studies show that colorectal cancer currently accounts for 10% of cancer diseases; hemorrhoids affect over 50% of the population; anal fistula affects over 25% of the population; fecal incontinence affects over 24%; anal pain affects 4 - 18%; chronic constipation affects 14 - 28%.

Most anorectal diseases (except cancer) in the mild stage are not life-threatening, but cause pain, discomfort, and directly affect health and daily activities. If not detected early, diagnosed and treated properly and promptly, the disease will become more serious and dangerous.

Regarding the effectiveness and progress in the treatment of anorectal diseases, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Manh Cuong, President of the Vietnam Anorectal Association, Director of Tue Tinh Hospital ( Hanoi ), said that anorectal diseases are currently treated effectively by combining modern medicine with traditional medicine, internal medicine, surgery, procedures, physical therapy, and rehabilitation. Many modern diagnostic methods are applied to detect early diseases of the anorectal area: endoscopic ultrasound, computed tomography, abdominal and pelvic MRI, anal canal pressure measurement, etc.

In fact, we have encountered many cases of self-treatment based on information on the internet leading to serious complications. There are cases of total necrosis of the anal canal, requiring surgery, even having to make an artificial anus.

According to the representative of the Department of Anorectal, Rectal and Pelvic Floor Surgery - 108 Central Military Hospital, the department has successfully researched and applied sphincter preservation for patients with low rectal cancer, to defecate naturally; treated cancer with multimodal methods according to the guidelines of the Japanese and American Cancer Associations; deployed many new techniques (minimum intervention) in the treatment of anal diseases such as laser treatment of hemorrhoids, methods of treating rectal prolapse, constipation, urinary incontinence, etc.

In particular, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Manh Cuong said that minimally invasive techniques and procedures have been applied to help reduce pain and shorten recovery time for patients, including: laparoscopic surgery and the use of robots to cut polyps and colorectal tumors; using argon plasma to stop bleeding and treat mucosal lesions; using lasers to reduce the size of hemorrhoids; tying hemorrhoids with rubber bands; burning hemorrhoids with high-frequency waves, direct electric pulses; treating hemorrhoids with infrared photocoagulation, sclerotherapy, etc.

Non-invasive treatments for anal and rectal diseases tend to dominate and account for 90%, or even more than 90%.

To prevent anorectal diseases, doctors advise people to eat foods high in fiber, green vegetables, drink plenty of water, do not put too much pressure when defecating, avoid sitting for long periods of time and exercise regularly...

"Based on scientific reports, for the first time we have guidelines for treating hemorrhoids, in which modern medicine and traditional medicine are combined. The Vietnam Association of Anorectal Surgery will also have information to widely recommend to people about disease prevention as well as methods and advances in treatment. At the same time, bring techniques to medical facilities, closer to the community, especially to remote and isolated areas," said Associate Professor Cuong.

The 11th National Scientific Conference organized by the Vietnam Association of Colorectal Surgery on October 19 in Hanoi was attended by experts and specialists from across the country.
