BMW has unveiled two next-generation electric concept cars, the Vision Neue Klasse and Vision Neue Klasse X, scheduled to launch in 2025. With bidirectional charging, the cars can not only recharge their batteries but also power devices or even the grid.

Other automakers also offer this technology in electric vehicles, but not all can reach the level of BMW's ambition.
Accordingly, in the early stages of this technology, BMW said customers can use the high voltage from the car's battery as an energy storage device. The solar power generated can be temporarily stored in the battery.
To do this, customers need to install a BMW DC Wallbox Professional and the stored energy can be used to power the home, allowing customers to be independent of the external grid for a period of time. Thereby reducing energy costs.
In phase two, bidirectional charging allows customers to provide a portion of their battery capacity to the outside, which can be used for both charging from the grid and discharging back to the grid at appropriate times. This allows customers to generate revenue from the energy exchange.

BMW is working with E.ON to do this, with customers being asked to opt for a flexible electricity tariff in some markets once regulatory measures are in place.
The popular two-way charging method makes the car an effective portable power bank. For example, customers can use it to charge electric bicycles or provide power for multiple devices when camping.
BMW says the implementation of bidirectional charging on Neue Klasse models helps ensure better security of energy supply and contributes significantly to the proportion of electricity consumption coming from renewable sources.
“For example, on-board storage systems can selectively absorb solar and wind power at peak times, releasing electricity back during times of low supply. With bidirectional charging, CO2 emissions can be reduced both in the mobility sector and in overall electricity generation,” the company said in a press release.
