As of mid-February this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recorded nearly 775 million Covid-19 cases worldwide.
New research suggests that up to 10% of people infected with Covid-19 may continue to have symptoms long after they recover. As many as 50% to 70% of those hospitalized experience persistent post-Covid-19 symptoms.
The cause of long Covid-19 is still unclear, but new research published in the journal Nature Immunology has found a link between disruptions in iron levels during the initial illness and prolonged Covid-19 symptoms. Alterations in iron metabolism are associated with long Covid-19 sequelae, including low serum iron levels, because a large amount of iron is mobilized during the body's fight against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to Professor Arturo Casadevall, Chair of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Maryland, USA. This, along with increased levels of the iron-regulating hormone hepcidin, leads to reduced serum iron levels. Therefore, early treatment of iron deficiency in Covid-19 patients may help avoid long-term health problems.
