The bus arson attacks were concentrated in the west of the city, where criminal gangs fight for territory.

Police said they had arrested 12 suspects in connection with the arsons, and stopped 15 people from trying to set fire to a cargo truck at one of the main gateways into the city.

Rio de Janeiro City Hall has issued a level 3 alert on a five-level scale for unrest in the popular tourist destination.

The attacks disrupted the city's bus rapid transit system, hampering the movement of residents and workers in the area. Public schools in the area also temporarily suspended classes.
