The launching ceremony of the feasibility study project to design and propose a green carbon credit project in 2024-2025 took place in Ca Mau province on March 12.

The project is chaired by the Union of Friendship Organizations of Ca Mau Province, and the sponsor is the Japan Children's Aid Organization (through Save the Children International - Representative Office in Vietnam). The objective is to assess the feasibility of designing documents to mobilize green carbon credits in coastal communities in Ca Mau Province.

Thereby, conducting consultation activities with stakeholders, jointly designing the project, reaching consensus on restoring and protecting at least 1,500 hectares of mangrove forests, the project design is built on international carbon standards.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Dong Khoi - Chairman of the Union of Friendship Organizations of Ca Mau Province - said that Ca Mau Province has about 92,460 hectares of forest. Of which, there are 11,000 hectares of natural forest.

Forests in Ca Mau are very diverse, including mangrove forests (concentrated along the coast), alum forests (U Minh Ha) and forests on the island clusters of Hon Khoai and Hon Chuoi.

Forests play an important role in life, not only in terms of environment, ecology and economy ; forests also help protect the coast, prevent erosion in the face of climate change challenges; forests help maintain biodiversity and especially in terms of livelihoods for people living under the forest canopy.

According to Mr. Nguyen Dong Khoi, the project launch aims to provide scientific, authentic, and convincing information, consistent with the mechanism and policies towards Net Zero by 2050.

Thereby meeting the practical needs of coastal communities, reducing the risk of forest degradation, increasing the area of forest plantation, contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing climate change, helping people increase income, and improving livelihoods for the community.

Despite the difficulties, the Quang Tri Forest Protection and Development Fund has been actively paying for carbon credits to forest owners. This effort is not only to ensure payment progress, but also to motivate forest owners to increase their responsibility for forest protection and development.
