According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration, as of December 2024, the total number of ships and vehicles registered in the Vietnam National Ship Registry is 1,490.

Of which, the fleet has 1,430 ships, the rest are other means. The total DWT of the fleet is about 11.367 million tons and the total GT is about 6.8 million (of which there are 956 transport ships with a total DWT of about 10.5 million tons, total GT of about 6.2 million).

This figure has increased compared to the same period last year. Previously, at the end of 2023, the number of registered vessels in the Vietnam National Ship Registry was about 1,449 ships with a total tonnage of over 13.7 million tons and a total capacity of over 7.2 million GT.

The average age of the current transport fleet is 17.4 years. Of which, the fleet of bulk and general cargo ships is 660 ships with an average age of 17.6 years; Container ships: 43 ships, average age 18.5 years; Oil and chemical tankers: 164 ships, average age 18.8 years; Liquefied gas carriers: 21 ships, average age 24.2 years; Passenger ships: 66 ships, average age 9.5 years.

Recently, many Vietnamese shipping companies have actively planned to invest and expand their fleets with diverse types of ships.

Typically, Vietnam Maritime Transport Joint Stock Company (Vosco) has planned to invest in about 10 ships (both old and newly built) of many types, from bulk carriers of Supramax segments (capacity from 56,000 - 58,000 DWT), Ultramax ships (capacity from 62,000 - 66,000 DWT), MR product oil tankers (capacity of about 50,000 DWT)...

In the first quarter of 2025 alone, Vosco expects to welcome about 2 more ships to "join" its fleet, improving production and business efficiency. Previously, in 2024, the company invested in a new ship after decades of not investing in any new ships.

Vinaship Shipping Joint Stock Company has also recently planned to expand its fleet. Last year, Vinaship received the Vinaship Unity ship in Singapore, with a capacity of 28,189 DWT, built in 2012.

For Vietnam National Shipping Lines ( VIMC ), in addition to the plan to liquidate old ships with low operating efficiency and not meeting IMO environmental requirements, VIMC is also developing a plan to invest in purchasing ships in line with the fleet development strategy, prioritizing new generation ships that are fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Oil tanker transport businesses are also planning to expand their fleets to meet the world's transportation needs and trends. In particular, in 2025, the Oil and Gas Transport Corporation (PVTrans) plans to invest in about 4 ships (1 MR-sized product oil tanker or 1 bulk carrier; 2 MR-sized product ships or 1 Aframax crude oil tanker; 1 large LNG/VLGC ship).
