Whales appear in Co To sea

VnExpressVnExpress27/09/2023

Quang Ninh At least four pods of whales, each consisting of 3-5 whales, have repeatedly come to Co To waters to feed in the past two weeks.

Mr. Nguyen Hai Linh, Head of the Department of Culture, Information and Tourism of Co To island district, said that each whale is 5-10 meters long and weighs several tons. They come to feed in the Dau Trau sea area and Mong Rong rock beach, about 700 meters from the large Co To island.

"Whales usually appear for about 15-20 minutes in the morning, swimming very close to fishermen's fishing boats, surfacing to breathe and opening their mouths wide to catch prey, creating a very interesting scene," said Mr. Linh. Many people going to sea in Co To used their phones to record it.

September is the time when fish breed, Co To sea has many schools of baby fish, so it attracts whales to come and feed. "Every year there are whales but only a few. This shows that Co To sea ecosystem is recovering," said Mr. Linh.

Whales are one of the largest animals living underwater, often helping fishermen overcome uncertainties at sea, so people in some localities have the custom of worshiping fish.

This year, Co To district has taken strong measures to prevent overfishing. Since August 2022, the island district has promoted and encouraged tourists and residents not to use nylon bags and single-use plastic products, with positive results. On September 15, this regulation was officially implemented.

As a result, the marine environment of Co To (an island about 80 km from the mainland) has improved, and some rare animals such as turtles, green sea turtles, and dolphins have returned to live there. People's awareness of replacing environmentally friendly items has also improved.
