Former Central Committee members in the Viet A case pay compensation

Concluding the investigation into the Viet A case, the Investigation Agency (IA) stated that some defendants had mitigating circumstances, so during the prosecution and trial of the case, it was recommended that these circumstances be considered.

Specifically, the accused, a former member of the Central Committee, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long, was assessed by the Investigation Agency as having confessed honestly, repented, actively cooperated with the Investigation Agency to clarify the nature of the case, had excellent achievements in work, and had paid back most of the money received from Mr. Phan Quoc Viet.

Investigation results showed that Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long received a bribe of 2.25 million USD (equivalent to more than 51 billion VND).

The investigation agency also said that two former Central Committee members Pham Xuan Thang (former Secretary of Hai Duong ) and Chu Ngoc Anh (former Minister of Science and Technology ) confessed honestly, repented; actively cooperated with the investigation agency to clarify the nature of the case; and had excellent achievements in their work.

Mr. Pham Xuan Thang has returned the entire amount of money he received from Mr. Phan Quoc Viet (100,000 USD, equivalent to more than 2.3 billion VND) and from Mr. Pham Duy Tuyen (former Director of CDC Hai Duong) (600 million VND and 50,000 USD, equivalent to more than 1.1 billion VND).

In addition, the following defendants were also assessed as having confessed honestly, repented; actively cooperated with the Investigation Police to clarify the nature of the case; had excellent achievements in work; and had paid back the entire amount of money received from Phan Quoc Viet: Trinh Thanh Hung (former Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Economic and Technical Sectors, Ministry of Science and Technology), Nguyen Huynh, Nguyen Minh Tuan, Nguyen Nam Lien...

Defendant Phan Quoc Viet was also assessed as having confessed honestly, repented, actively cooperated with the investigation agency to clarify the entire nature of the case, contributed to the prevention and control of the Covid-19 epidemic, and most of the money he benefited from, caused damage to state property, and bribes have been recovered.

According to the investigation agency, most of the money benefited, caused damage to state property and bribes in the case have been recovered.
