In a statement on July 7, the Cambodian Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications spoke out about the information spreading on social networks.

The ministry said the information was from Thailand "aimed at tarnishing Cambodia's reputation internationally." Cambodia asserted that its government had absolutely no connection with North Korean hacker groups.

In contrast, Cambodia said that a Thai hacker group identified as BlackEye-Thai has been launching frequent cyber attacks on most of the Cambodian government's online systems over the past two weeks.

Cambodia's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications said the attempts "were effectively thwarted by cybersecurity systems and only caused minor impacts."

"Please be aware of these facts and be extremely cautious of misinformation being spread on social media," the ministry said in a statement, according to the Phnom Penh Post .

The statement reflects tensions between the two neighbors in the digital space since a clash on May 28 between Thai and Cambodian troops at a disputed border area in Ubon Ratchathani, in which a Cambodian soldier was killed.

Last month, The Nation newspaper quoted a major Thai internet provider as saying that Cambodian hackers had attacked several websites in Thailand.

At that time, Mr. Amorn Chomchoey, head of Thailand's National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA), said that the agency was closely monitoring cyber threats.

“Although no serious damage has been reported so far, we have issued warnings to both government and private agencies to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures,” said Mr Chomchoey.

On June 10, the Bangkok Post also reported that Thai cyber police had issued an arrest warrant for a group of Cambodian hackers who sabotaged Thai government websites related to border disputes.

The force said it was working with international agencies to locate and extradite the hackers, identified as "bl4ck_cyb3r", for prosecution under Thai law.
