A press release issued by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on January 28 said that the number of US personnel injured in the drone attack in Jordan was 25.
"Last night, three American service members were killed and several others were wounded in a drone strike on our forces stationed in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border," US President Joe Biden confirmed.
“While we are gathering facts about this attack, we know the attack was carried out by Iranian-backed extremist groups operating in Syria and Iraq,” Biden added.
Prior to that, at least 158 attacks were carried out against US and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, according to CNN. However, most of these operations did not pose a serious threat or cause major damage to infrastructure.
The attack in Jordan comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with regional powers continuing to protest Israel’s bombardment of Gaza in response to a Hamas offensive last October. The US and other countries have warned that the conflict could spiral into a regional war.
The US has recently attacked several groups in Iraq and Syria that Washington claims are backed by Iran. The US, along with the UK, has also launched a bombing campaign against Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen in response to a series of attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
