According to The Guardian today, December 4, the elderly couple in the incident were Mr. Jeffrey Edwards and Mrs. Sian Edwards, living in Pembrokeshire, a county in southwest Wales, UK. Both of them thought it was a harmless "fake" bomb so they kept it for decoration.

The wife also said she often hit the bomb while gardening.

It was not until an officer patrolling the area on November 29 that the bomb was discovered. According to information, the dangerous object dates back to the 19th century and had been in the Edwards’ garden for a long time, and contained explosives. The incident was then reported to the British Ministry of Defense .

The bomb was moved to an abandoned quarry in the area a day later. After being buried in five tonnes of sand, the couple's "friend" was detonated. Tests showed that the bomb still worked with a very small charge, according to the BBC.

"It was an old friend. I'm so sorry that the poor old thing got blown to pieces," said Mr Edward, who said the previous owners of the house said they found the bomb more than 100 years ago and kept it because they thought it was harmless.

Through assessment, the British Ministry of Defense said the dangerous object was a naval shell from more than 100 years ago.

According to The Guardian , British Navy warships used to anchor in St Brides Bay and soldiers used the sandbank near the Welsh village of Broad Haven for target practice.
