Viktor Gyokeres' move to Arsenal, once seen as a major turning point in the Swedish striker's career, is in limbo as negotiations continue to stall. According to Portuguese newspaper Maisfutebol , frustration has reached a boiling point as Gyokeres' father was reported to have burst into tears on July 19 (local time), fearing that his son's dream of playing for Arsenal would be shattered.
It is the first time the Gyokeres family has shown such a strong emotional reaction to a transfer, showing the level of tension and expectation that went into the deal. However, Gyokeres's home club, Sporting Lisbon, appear unmoved. Some sources say officials at the Portuguese club are viewing this as a "pressure tactic" by the player and his agent to force them to make concessions.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas has stood firm, insisting that the €10m bonus in the deal be “easily achieved”, and has declared it a non-negotiable condition for the deal to be completed.
Specifically, Sporting proposed the surcharge be divided into four stages: €2.5 million after Gyokeres' first 20 appearances for Arsenal; a further €2.5 million after the next 20 matches; €2.5 million if Arsenal qualify for the Champions League; and a final €2.5 million if the striker makes 20 more appearances next season. Arsenal believe that these conditions should be redesigned to ensure at least one more challenging milestone, rather than making all the terms too easy.
While the add-on fee remains a sticking point, the main transfer fee has been verbally agreed. Arsenal and Sporting have agreed a figure of €63.5m (around £55m). The deal was agreed after Gyokeres’ agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, agreed to waive his 10% agent’s commission to simplify the payment structure.
However, as the two sides have yet to reach an agreement on the terms of the bonus, the contract has yet to be officially signed. In that context, Arsenal departed for Singapore on July 19 without Gyokeres in the squad, showing that the deal is still far from reality.
According to the plan, Arsenal will have a series of friendly matches in Asia, against AC Milan on July 23, facing Newcastle on July 27 and ending the tour with a match against Tottenham in Hong Kong (China) on July 31. Gyokeres' absence from this tour is a clear signal that time is running out if the two sides want to complete the deal before the new season.
