Can Chinese warships and 'kill nets' defeat the US fleet?

Chinese researchers have shown in a simulation how the Type 055 destroyer combined with drones and unmanned boats could counter the US fleet, according to SCMP.

The South China Morning Post ( SCMP ) reported today, February 2, that scientists from the China Ship Design and Development Center (CSDDC) and the Central China University of Science and Technology in China recently jointly organized a war simulation game. The simulation showed how China could defeat the US Navy fleet.

A battle the team simulated, set in the western Pacific just a few hundred kilometers east of Taiwan, saw a Type 055 destroyer facing off against an advancing US Navy fleet. China’s Type 055 destroyers are among the world’s largest warships, but in the simulation, the US fleet included eight Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

Accompanying the Type 055, two unmanned motherships were ordered to move forward and release 32 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and 14 unmanned boats. In response, the US fleet launched 32 LRASM stealth anti-ship cruise missiles and Tomahawk cruise missiles, all aimed at the Type 055. The LRASM cruise missiles are advanced but expensive, with an average price of more than $3 million each, according to SCMP .

Detecting the incoming missiles, the UAVs and drone boats cooperated with the Type 055 to counter the attack, according to the simulation. After the dust settled, the Type 055 remained unharmed and the drone boats still had enough ammunition to fend off the next wave of attacks.

The war game simulation is a testament to China's ambition to change the nature of maritime conflict by using unmanned weapons on a large scale, according to SCMP .

The team that conducted the simulation stressed that UAVs and unmanned boats would provide the Chinese military with a highly effective and low-cost “kill network,” according to SCMP , citing an article published in the Chinese-language journal Warship Research on January 13.

There is no information yet on the US Navy's response to the study.
