Choose the right technology

Báo Sài Gòn Giải phóngBáo Sài Gòn Giải phóng03/08/2024

To develop healthcare , many countries in the world have chosen to prioritize resources for developing high technology (often at high cost) for diseases that were previously difficult to diagnose and treat. This is a reasonable direction after effectively applying appropriate technology (at lower cost) to help improve treatment capacity, improve quality of life and reduce mortality rates for diseases that many people suffer from.

Nowadays, the term “high technology” is often mentioned when discussing the development of the healthcare system. High technology in healthcare refers to the use of advanced medical equipment, integrated with artificial intelligence applications, big data, computer science , etc. to significantly improve the quality of diagnosis, treatment and patient care. The cost of equipment and technical services in this high-tech group is very high, not all healthcare systems can access it.

The term “appropriate technology” or “appropriate technology” in the healthcare field refers to the set of techniques, drugs, medical devices and procedures used by healthcare professionals to deliver healthcare services. It is affordable, but it does not mean primitive technology, simple technology. The cost of implementing technology needs to be considered in the context of the overall benefits and expected long-term outcomes.

When deciding on a new technology, appropriateness also depends on whether access to the technology is equitable for all or whether it only benefits a few. Given limited resources, it is important to prioritize new technologies that improve the efficiency of public health services, and the responsibility of the health system to protect consumers from unsafe and ineffective technologies.

Currently, the city's health sector is making efforts to synchronously develop four key groups of activities: improving disease prevention capacity; strengthening primary health care, effectively implementing community health care; developing professional outpatient emergency care and developing specialized health care. This requires health leaders and managers to flexibly and appropriately apply "appropriate medical techniques" and "specialized medical techniques" to bring about the best results at the most reasonable cost.
