The thorny search for peace in Gaza

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/12/2024

According to Reuters on December 5, citing informed sources, Mr. Witkoff made trips in late November. Here, Mr. Witkoff had two separate meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. After Mr. Witkoff's trips, the senior Hamas member may return to Qatar to start a new round of negotiations "in the near future," according to Reuters.

Commenting on the above information, an unnamed US official said that President Joe Biden's aides were aware of Mr. Witkoff's contacts and understood that Mr. Trump's special envoy supported the Gaza deal in the direction that the current administration was promoting. According to the above official, Mr. Biden's team has been constantly updating Mr. Trump's side, but the two sides have not worked directly with each other. Mr. Trump has not commented on this new information.

The road to peace talks and an agreement between Hamas and Israel has been further complicated as Hamas said on December 4 that it had information that Tel Aviv was planning a hostage rescue operation, and vowed to “neutralize” the hostages if Israel acted. According to Reuters, citing a statement from Hamas, the group also demanded “tightening” the living conditions of the hostages and compliance with the instructions issued after Israel’s hostage rescue operation at the Nuseirat refugee camp on June 8.

There has been no response from Israel to Hamas’s claim, but in a statement on December 4, Prime Minister Netanyahu said the body of one hostage had been recovered after a special operation by the Israeli internal security agency (Shin Bet) with the support of the army. Details of the operation were not disclosed.

In relation to the fighting, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on December 4 intensified attacks on the Khan Younis area and many other places across Gaza, killing at least 47 people. The IDF said the attack targeted senior Hamas forces operating in Khan Younis. According to the Gaza Health Authority, the conflict has so far left more than 44,500 Palestinians dead, more than 105,500 others injured, and more than 2.2 million people in a serious humanitarian crisis.
